July 2013 Featured Artist: Ed Newell
Native Kentuckian Ed Newell has had a love of the outdoors since childhood. A few years ago, he bought his
first digital camera while planning for a retirement hobby. He explored various genres of photography and
discovered a preference for capturing the natural landscapes of Kentucky. His hobby has evolved into a
passion.
A normal day's photography shoot for Newell can begin as early as 4 a.m. With his camera gear in tow, he
heads off to a predetermined location and arrives as the new day is breaking. Rising early is the key to
getting beautiful early morning light or fog banks, which can create a special mood for his landscape
images. Late in the afternoon is also a time when Ed captures the light for an inspiring image of nature. Both
times are referred to as the "golden light."
Newell may only be at a particular site for a short period of time due to the lighting conditions. The evening
before, he watches the weather forecast, hoping for partly cloudy or overcast days. Preferring to shoot
landscapes without a clear blue sky, Ed searches for clouds to add drama to his images. The use of certain
photographic filters helps him in capture well-exposed images.
While on location, Newell is constantly trying different angles and perspectives from which to shoot his
image. Chest waders are an essential part of his gear when out in the field. Wearing the waders enables
him to get into streams and waterways to capture a different view. Newell seeks interesting foreground
objects to be included in his work, giving his images more depth and dimension.
After the golden light has passed, Newell packs up his gear and heads home. He then reviews the images
in hopes of finding at least one that captures the beauty of nature he experienced.
Newell is a juried exhibiting member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen. His work can be purchased
