Governor’s School for the Arts Jazz Band and Choir

The Kentucky Center Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA), an agency in the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, is developing the next generation of Kentucky artists, as well as cultivating arts audiences. Each year 225 students participate in GSA’s rigorous three-week summer program, which brings together a community of professional and young artists from across Kentucky to a university campus for three weeks of intensive college-level training in the arts. GSA’s residential program targets students who are aspiring creative writers, actors, instrumental and vocal musicians, dancers, filmmakers, visual artists and architects. Many GSA students come from areas of Kentucky where they are artistically isolated, and specialized arts instruction is limited or simply not available. This program gives critical support for an exceptionally talented group of young people while fostering discipline and achievement. By living and learning in a “community of artists,” students are led to understand how they may be of service to the cause of the arts in general, and to their communities, school and the Commonwealth. Alumni accomplishments include performances on Broadway and with the Metropolitan Opera, American Ballet Theatre and New York City Opera.
